Music and culture

Minorca has a special link with the music, since it demonstrates that in her it finds the Principal Theatre of Mahón with 180 years of history reflecting it with an enviable programming where the Week of the Opera stands out. Also there are prominent the Festival of Jazz, the organ of the Church of Santa María or the musical activities that organize Maó's Joventuts Musicals.

Patron Saint Festivites

The patron Saint Festivites of Minorca turn concerning the figure of the horse being the great protagonist. The "caixers" and "cavallers" (riders) decked with the suit called "de just" (of just man), mount breeding horses, the majority of Minorcan race, forming a long billiard cue "qualcada" (cavalcade) that will cross the principal streets and squares of the population. All of them are celebrated during the summer.


In spite of being known as the island of the calm Minorca it takes different alternatives of leisure as the traditional visit to his summer markets as well as to his markets about which there is a wide gastronomic offer as in the case of the "Mercat des Peix" of Brick, or that of Ciutadella.

Also it´s possible to enjoy an equestrian spectacle full of shades and emotions or the sunsets in a natural cave in Cala'n Porter with a legendary history or Fornells's Beaches, without forgetting the visit to a few wineries at the environment of San Luis village.

The beaches

Considered as " the Carib of the Mediterranean " Minorca possesses a wide variety of beaches and coves with very different typology depending on his geographical situation. Those who are placed in the north part of the island are more rocky and with darker sand and the placed ones in the south are of white sand and crystalline waters.

With his 700 square kilometers and 216 kilometers of coast besides 300 days sunshine during the year, there are no excuses to not enjoy all the beaches.

The museums

Walk along the alleys of the municipalities of Minorca and visiting the different museums that we will find in them is a good option if we want to escape of the sun and beach. The most spectacular one (because it is necessary to come to him by ship)it´s placed in the center of the Port of Mahon. To know the history of Minorca we recommend the visit to the Military Museum in Es Castell.

In the streets of Mahon we find the Museum of Minorca and the centre of Art and History Hernandez Sanz.

In Ciutadella you can visit the municipal musem Bastio de sa Font , the Minorcan´s Diocesans Museum and some art galleries. Finally in Ferrerías you will find The Museum of Geology of Minorca and in Es Mercadal´s village the Craftmen Center of Minorca.


The island of Minorca is known by the book " The Island of 5 lighthouses ", though in Minorca there are 7 and not 5 lighthouses: 3 in Ciutadella, one in Mercadal, Sant Lluis, Mahón, and Es Castell.

Seaports (Harbours)

Minorca has a special idyll with the world of the science of navigation thanks to four wonderful ports that it possesses being the Port of Mahón the principal one of all (the second major port of the Mediterranean) If we toward the east we meet the Port of Cales Fonts in Es Castell, where it´s possible to see the first sunrise of Spain.

Crossing the island, in the municipality of Es Mercadal, we can find the famous and coquettish Fornells's Port where you can taste the his traditional lobster stew,fresh fish and seafood. Finally, located in the former capital of Minorca ,you will find the Port of Ciutadella with commercial, fishing and tourist activity.

Talayotic Culture of Menorca

A different way of discovering Minorca is entering into the talayotic Minorca, candidate for being declarated World heritage by the UNESCO.

The prehistory in Minorca includes a wide chronological period that goes from the establishment of the man in the island, towards 2500/2100 aC, up to the Roman conquest, 123 aC. During these more than two thousand years different stages develop.

Beside crossing the Talayotic Minorca there are must-see places like the Fortress Isabel II , fortress of La Mola, the Fortress of Lazareto and the Fort Marlborough being a part of the history of Minorca.

Horse Way “Camí de Cavalls”

For nature lovers, of the sport or of the challenges ,the adventure of the Camí de Cavalls is the best option being the ideal way to make a round island trip to through an historical path. The Camí de Cavalls crosses a historical path of 185 km that gives the round to Minorca following the littoral passing through ravines,valleys, torrents, wetlands and zones of culture; it connects former watchtowers, lighthouses and trenches, and drives to great part of the beaches of the island.


The situation of the island of Minorca unitedly with his climatological characteristics (dampness and the scourge of the wind of the north known as Tramontana) helps to her products being special since it can be verified in his cheese Mahón-Menorca with designation of origin as like the wine (Wine form the Minorca´s fields).

On the other hand and thanks to the legacy that has been passing from generation to generation, loyal to their origins and that summarizes the essence of the people of this land: simple, with a pleasant character, and that can enjoy the life and of the fruits that his island offers.

The Department of Economy of the Consell Insular of Minorca created a brand of guarantee Crafts of Minorca with the aim to distinguish the crafts that were elaborated in the island and to identify the professional deserving craftsmen of representing to the crafts of Minorca, on the basis of the quality of his work.

The Handcrafted Center of Minorca it is the point where there converge all these samples of the local crafts with the rest of trades, pieces and traditional works of the island.
